Fun Monday: The story of your house & road

Today for Fun Monday I thought it would be neat to hear about the story behind your home and the road you live on. It doesn't have to be historical, maybe just something that stands out to you. It would be nice to have pictures to go with your little story. I also would like to know who has the oldest house. Whoever has the oldest house will get a little Christmas treat from little ole me.
List of participants below my FM post! This is a sticky post and will stay up till Tuesday. So, if you don't mind go below for other post till then. Thank you and a wonderful day!
This has been a big wow for me this week. I hope y'all had fun with it. I know this sounded sorta like another Fun Monday we did, but I wanted to bring out a little more and see who had the oldest home. I don't know who is next FM host will be, so, If you'll let me know it would be nice. Ooops! I forgot that part.

Okay, to the story behind my road and my house. My road was the 1st road (paved)ever made in Pontotoc, MS. It was made in 1941 and it is a concrete road. If you don't know it's concrete, you'll think it's a driveway. The funny thing is that it was never used much for anything until about 11 years ago when they decided to make a neighborhood. I have asked around and nobody knows why they built a road and not used it. My house was built in 1941 also. My house sat where our Burger King is now. It had sit there for about 20 years without anyone living in it. We moved it 10 years ago and strip it down to the frame. The wood is so seasoned that a lot of our nails would bend or break when we would try to put then in. We did most of our work our selves along with friends, family and others that wanted to help Habitat for Humanity.
I have always thought it was neat that my house and the road I live on was both built in 1941.
(We have had so much traffic and heavy vehicles that our road is getting big holes. I'm afraid they are going to pave it. That's one reason I wanted to do this, so I could always remember the original one.)

We just had a freeway built here with concrete; it is suppose to last longer. It looks like they are right about that. That is neat that you house and the street were built the same year, and that you have done all that remodelling. My sisters own a house that was built about that time, and they have been stripping it down one section at a time. My fun Monday will be up tomorrow.

I love the picture of your house with the lights. It looks so festive :-). Our lights still aren't up on the outside, between the winds and the rain. Maybe today is the day.

Our street, which is less than 1/2 mile long, jsut got connect 7 years ago, and the two ends were spelled differently. One had 3 "e"s, one 2. When it got connected, they kept the 3 "e" spelling, but no one told the post office, so when you put something in the computer to spell, it always changes the spelling. I had to look at the sign finally to know that I was spelling it correctly. And an old map to find out why it happened.

Hi Kitten, I discussed the hosting situation with Kaytabug last week it seems that by popular choice Fun Monday will be suspended for the Christmas Eve Monday and I offered to host the New Years Eve Monday, as I understand it this is still what will happen.

Yes, Peter you are correct, this is still what will happen. It is my fault I didn't e-mail Kitten sooner than a few minutes ago. I am sorry. I will be letting everyone know in my FM post as well.

I love those old houses. But I also know that bringing them up to todays code would be a lot of work too. Glad that you have the energy and talent to do it.

Gattina said...

Everything looks so different to where I live, the house and the street but that's because we have another way of house building. All houses are made out of bricks. No wood at all. Your Christmas decoration looks beautiful !

You did a nice job on the house.

I couldn't find your Email address to answer your question.

Hey Katie,

Thanks for hosting this week :). It's great idea that you got a photo of your concrete road before it was re-paved. Your house is such a cheery color and y'all were brave to take on such a HUGE project. The result was well worth it :)!

Mine's posted--I behaved myself and only included two pics and a short story (but I'll have three different posts up by the end of today).

You're right I would have thought that was a driveway. It is neat the road and the house were built the same year.

Karina said...

Thanks for hosting this week, and thanks for adding me to the list!

Wow, that's pretty neat that the road is paved the way it is, and that it has been left that way all these years. I'm always fascinated by "moving a house" stories. I think that is so cool!

I'm so impressed that you did all that work yourselves. Your house looks so nice with all your lights up. Thanks so much for hosting. This was fun!

Thanks for hosting kitten!

I love your house and its history. The road does look like a driveway! I googled your town and can't tell exactly how far you are from my relatives. I have family in Canton, MS and Morton, MS (both kind of near Jackson). I've spent time at Roosevelt State Park for family reunions the past couple of years.

I finally have my post up. It includes video and that is what took so long, sorry. I like your cute house and the Christmas lights.

Thank you for hosting this week it's been good fun.

Your house looks lovely and how interesting it was built at the same time as the street. I know a bit about trying to bring an old house back to life. It's hard work and a fistful of money!!

Hey Katie,

Thanks for hosting this week :). Your house looks so lovely decorated. It definetly has that Warm HOME for Christmas feel to it.

Everyone's invited to stop by and visit my home.
